A Half Century Pause...

It was October, 1953, that NWCA’s first publication, a three-page newsletter called Shavings From the Workbench, was mailed out to 19 fledgling members. Several issues later the name was changed to Chip Chats. It wasn’t until January, 1968, that the first off-set magazine was mailed out.

Over the past 50 years we have experienced many changes. The association has flourished and grown, enjoying a world-wide membership with subscriptions going to 47 countries. Solely dependent on membership dues, Chip Chats carries no paid advertisements.

Success of any venture depends upon the loyal support of members. One has only to reflect on the many exhibitions that display the artistry of carvers of all levels to know that woodcarving is alive and well in the U.S. and abroad.

Covers from past issues of Chip Chats gracing the front of this issue were selected at random —
Top: Jan-Feb 1968, Frank Geminden; Jan-Feb ’69, “William Tell” by Johann Huggler; Mar-Apr ’70, Juliet Squires.
Middle: May-June ’76, Sophia Goan watches Martin Lohs; Jan-Feb ’78, Coat-of-arms by Harro Hall.
Bottom: Mar-Apr ’84, Florida carvers restore circus wagon; Nov-Dec ’86, deer by Hersh Westbrook; Sep-Oct ’80, carving by “Dee” Flagg.
