Dayton Still Dazzles

Article by Lori Trickler

The annual Artistry in Wood Show in Dayton, Ohio, still dazzles the wood enthusiasts and the public by drawing the finest artisans and craftsmen in the country. It is one of the biggest shows with 263 booths occupied by 187 exhibitors representing 17 states and Canada.

Held November 10 and 11, 2001, the 20th Artistry in Wood Show attracted nearly 4500 people to its magnificent woodcarvings, furniture, clocks, toys, turnings and scroll saw art for sale, display and competition.

Best of show in woodcarving (with $500 cash plus a $500 Henry Taylor Tools certificate) went to Jim Stadtlander of Mantua, Ohio, for a detailed relief carving (see cover photo). This carving was also the best in the relief category, earning an additional $50. Jim also won the second best-of-show award ($450 cash) and best of human figure category ($50) with an Indian maiden carved in the round. Jim goes in the record book for his second time winning both first and second best-of-show honors — he did this in 1999, too.

Third best in show was a beautifully carved and painted figure of Santa feeding a basset hound, earning Leah Wachter of Sarasota, Fla., $300 cash. Leah’s sculpture also topped the miscellaneous category, winning an additional $50.
