The Crib - Symbol of Peace on Earth

By Martin Geisler-Moroder

Each year when schools have begun and the weather turns crisp, a woodcarver must start thinking about the Christmas season. We in Tirol begin to pull out last year’s Crib figures and decide what will be added to the collection for this year. Some families in Tirol have been collecting Cribs for generations. A true collector will have upwards of 200 pieces in one Crib scene.

On the front cover of this issue is one of the original Crib scenes designed by my father, professor Rudolf Geisler-Moroder. It has been in our program for 40+ years, and as you can guess it is still in great demand. In our shop, we have a selection of about 150 different figures to carve.

Every year here at Geisler-Moroder Woodcarving School, students get together and build Cribs as a class project. You can see the love and inspiration as the Crib takes shape. No one is restricted to a certain style; in fact, each student is given artistic license to create something new and different. Also the students are encouraged to make figures to add to their own Cribs.
