Ram by Gene Webb

In the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee resides a carver of extraordinary talent. He has been carving for about 25 years and his works reflect both his natural-born talent and his experiences. For all who know him and his creations, he is indeed a master carver; however, he shuns this title and is very modest about his carving skills.

Gene Webb, who grew up on Nebo Mountain in the Townsend, Tenn., area, began carving wood when he was 10 years old. Little did he know then, it would become his life-time career. His first carvings were tiny shoes, chicken, cows and other farm animals. Gene says he would complete them and then discard them as scrap. His uncle realized Gene’s talent and would rescue these figures.

Gene has won blue ribbons in every competition he has entered and has won best of show many times, plus People’s Choice awards. He will tell you that his “way of life is wildlife;” however, he does carve cowboys, Indians, mountain men, dogs, hogs, totem poles, snakes, and a wide variety of subjects too numerous to mention.

You can view some of his carvings at www.woodcarvers.com, and e-mail him at woodcarver@mindspring.com.
