A Big New York Kiss for 2000 Congress by Pete Ortel
There was love in the air as carvers from all over the world gathered
for the 2000 International Woodcarvers Congress held this past June at
the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Much of the credit goes to Peter
Ortel from Monroe, N.Y., whose spectacular caricature carving
come-to-life, entitled “Love,” won best-of-show honors, along with the
Henry Taylor Tools $1500 best-of-show cash award. The 18 x 18 x 15-inch
carving was obviously a labor of love, and looked remarkably similar to
Peter’s lovely wife Madelyn. Peter’s carving apparently touched
everyone’s heart. It also won the much-coveted WOOD Magazine’s Peoples
Choice $500 cash award.
