Proud To Be a 'Power Carver' by Bruce Alexander
I am a "power carver." Once upon a time, I was reluctant to own up to
that label. I use whatever tool works best for the task at hand: router,
chain saw, angle grinder, die grinder, rotary tool, micrometer tool,
high-speed air tools, and even mallets, chisels, gouges and knives.
Sometimes, all of these on one carving. Why, I'd use dynamite if it were
needed to do the job at hand …
My favorite subjects are highly detailed, realistic wildlife carvings.
The African leopard and springbok on the cover is 22" tall, carved from
jelutong wood and mounted on an American black walnut base. It is not
painted — the "color" and contrast are burnt on. A natural Danish oil
finish was used. The eyes are painted with a gloss lacquer. I did much
study and research on the animals' muscle structure, hunting/fleeing
habits, and the likelihood that this drama could occur. The sculpture
was purchased by a hunter from Africa who was very familiar with both
animals …
